On August 25, the Fort McMurray SPCA hosted Dog Jog, a fundraising “pet friendly family fun day that included a 2.5km walk, golf ball drop, BBQ, live entertainment, and activities for kids,” Volunteer and Events Coordinator Jen Pick- Neville explained. The fun filled day resulted in $12,000 raised for the animals of the Fort McMurray SPCA.
Neville said that they had over “50 dogs participate in the walk.” This year “was the first time we had ever tried a golf ball drop,” and this tactic was fairly successful, as the group “sold 757 of our 1000 golf balls available.” In order to plan a large event like Neville did, she advises that people be organized. “The only real issue we had was that it rained, so be prepared like we were and have lots of tents,” she said. Neville used word of mouth, television and radio advertisements as well as social networking, including the Fort Murray SPCA Facebook page. It seemed to Neville that social networking was the most effective publicity method available.
Neville ordered the Design Your Own Ticket from Eventgroove, one that included a stub, and added a happy “Dog Jog” logo, along with a golf ball image, to reflect the nature of the festivities. The DYO option made it possible to create the exact ticket type she wanted.
Local publicity was comprehensive and appreciated. The whole event was extensively covered in the community by “all 5 local radio stations, our local television station, all 3 local newspapers and by 2 local bloggers as well,” Neville said. One of the bloggers’ posts of the event can be found here.
The Fort McMurray SPCA was founded in 1978 and their goal is “Our goal is to ensure every companion animal in the Wood Buffalo community is humanely treated through protection, proper care, public awareness and education. Our comprehensive adoption process and community involvement facilitates lasting bonds and relationships for companion animals, pet owners and the public,” according to their website.
