Sorority Raises Money for AIDS Charity

The Alpha Sigma Chi sorority from Oshawa, ON held their third annual Code Red club night on November 14 at Oshawa Music Hall. Their party raises money and awareness for HIV/AIDS, and this year’s event brought in $1489.60 for the AIDS Committee of Durham Region (ACDR).

Made up of members from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Durham College and the Oshawa campus of Trent University, Alpha Sigma Chi initiated its founding class of 14 sisters in April of 2009. They promote “academic excellence, philanthropic giving and the uniting of all cultures,” and support a number of community events and non-profits along with ACDR, including the Canadian Spinal Research Organization.

ACDR provides “HIV/AIDS related services to the infected or affected and the general community in the region of Durham.” The community-based organization offers several services, which range from prevention education, advocacy and counseling, to a food bank program, peer mentoring and free naturopathic, acupuncture and acupressure sessions.

Nicole Bilson, Philanthropy Chair of Alpha Sigma Chi, says that they mostly used word of mouth to advertise. The sorority also used Facebook for promotions a couple of weeks beforehand, and partnered with the club’s promotion company to get word out as well. “We really expanded our reach, which was a very successful strategy,” Bilson adds.

Alpha Sigma Chi raised most of the money by holding a pre-sale for the tickets, but they also held a raffle during the event which raised over $300, and counts as a highlight of the evening for Bilson. “We had a lot of great prizes thanks to our sponsors, which included Buffalo Wild Wings, Forbidden Pleasures, Cineplex and 365 Sports! A lot of the people who attended seemed to enjoy that.”

Bilson believes that advanced planning can help anyone pull off a successful fundraising party. “Planning was very hectic, and I’m glad I started two months in advance,” she notes. “This is the first time we used Eventgroove and I am extremely satisfied with our decision. We saved about $60 from previous years, and the online template for AIDS Fundraiser was absolutely perfect. We will be returning to Eventgroove for next year’s event.”

“As for other advice,” Bilson continues, “I would make sure to stay in constant communication with all other partners, such as club staff, or the staff of the organization you’re fundraising for. Also, always remember to thank your sponsors.”
